Artist Cliff Burtt won the commission with his as-yet-unnamed design based on the area’s topography.
In his pitch to the council, he said it would be a reflection of the area’s history.
“The profile of the sculpture is based on topographical mapping of the area ... the gaps between the elements of the work can be viewed as representations of the shafts sunk into the earth by gold miners,” he wrote.
The work will be on one of two spots on the corner of Warrenheip Street and Learmonth Road.
Mr Burtt said the scale of the work at 1.6 metres high and eight metres across would encourage interaction from pedestrians.
The process began in November when the Buninyong Community Reference Group supported the idea and allocated $30,000 from the Engaging Communities Program.
The rest of the money will come from the public art capital budget.
