With high hopes, Sanders spent “years and years” creating the work until he stumbled upon an unlikely obstacle.
“About five years ago I found out that Top Hat The Musical had opened on West End so that threw a bit of a spanner in the works,” he said.
“I really wanted to write a musical to honour the work, style and beautiful Hollywood feel of Astaire and Rogers.
“I started thinking about how I could change the idea slightly and I thought, what better way than to create something that incorporated all of the amazing aspects of their films?”
So the 2014 Federation University graduate set to work on writing a new musical entitled I Won't Dance.
Sanders said the Australian production was a tribute to the work of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, celebrating their light-hearted screwball comedy style.
The production weaves together the duo's 10 films made during the 1930s and includes a plethora of their timeless hits including, Cheek to Cheek, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Let’s Face the Music and Dance and many more.
“The title (I Won't Dance) is ironic because there is actually a lot of dancing but it's also very relevant to the plot because the plotline in all of the Astaire/Rogers films was boy meets girl, girl refuses to dance, boy wins girl,” Sanders said.
“If you stick to the formula you will still be honouring their work and I managed to write an original story which follows the same basic formula.
“I think the thing I love most about the musical is that it will bring this style of a show to a new generation,” he said.
"With everything going on in the world, there is definitely a place for this kind of entertainment which sends audiences out with a feeling of joy and happiness.”
I Won't Dance will have its world premiere at Her Majesty's Theatre on Saturday, July 18.
