Kane Anthony Larsen, 42, appeared briefly before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday following his arrest earlier this week in connection with an alleged bag snatch and stabbing in the car park of Preston Market on June 12.
Mr Larsen, of Hawthorn, is accused of stealing a woman's handbag and then stabbing a man who chased him.
He is charged with one count of theft, two counts of intentionally causing injury, two of recklessly causing injury and two of assault.
A 37-year-old man suffered injuries to his chest and to his hands during the incident.
Police on Tuesday released CCTV footage and images of a shirtless man with a knife stashed in the back of his jeans, who was seen in Preston around the time of the incident.
Mr Larsen was arrested hours after police released the CCTV footage and images.
He appeared in court wearing a brown, long-sleeved top and glasses and was remanded in custody to return to court in September. He did not apply for bail.
