Max and William Shorter were both diagnosed with the condition in December of 2013, and in April this year the Shorters learned their youngest son Hudson also had DMD.
The Buninyong Football Club plans to raise between $5000 and $7000 from the game, with some players donating a portion of their game wage in addition to the money generated from the shoe laces and wrist bands.
Buninyong player Adam Scott is also donating $20 for every goal he kicks during the season, which currently sits at seven.
Mrs Shorter said the support from the football club has been “amazing”.
Buninyong Football Club president Leigh Edwards said the family had played a big part in the club, and the community was eager to give back to a family in need.
“Whenever anyone’s in need, a footy club is a pretty good place to be. We’re all about families, and through power in numbers we can help financially,” Mr Edwards said.
The football club has already raised almost $1000 at their weekly Auskick event.
Ms Shorter’s brother Mark will also celebrate his 250th game against Gordon.
DMD is a hereditary disease which affects one in 3500 males, leaving victims with a life expectancy of less than 30 years. There is currently no cure for DMD, with steroids being the boys’ only medical relief.
Money raised at the football match will go towards a family holiday for the Shorters, who are planning a trip to Disneyland to see the stars of the Cars films, Lightning McDueen and Mater.
“When we first found out about Max and Will we said we’re taking them to Disneyland before they’re in wheelchairs,” Mrs Shorter said.
While the Shorter’s remain hopeful a cure may be found for DMD in the future, Ms Shorter said the most important goal of the day would be to raise awareness of the condition.
