A man armed with a machete has held police at bay for more than three hours after barricading himself inside a Tarneit home with a woman and two children.

The ordeal began at about 1pm on Winona Circuit, Tarneit, in Melbourne's outer west and ended after the man handed himself to police at about 4.30pm on Monday.
Nobody was injured and the man has been taken to hospital for an assessment, a police spokeswoman said.
It is understood the man, woman and children were known to each other.
