A Melbourne court heard on Thursday that federal police found two batons and a can of pepper spray during a search of Mark Andrew Murray's home in May last year.

Commonwealth prosecutor Elle Linfoot​ said in her summary that investigators found the can labelled "Federal Police" in his bedroom and an ASP extendable baton and riot squad-style baton in a room under the house.

Ms Linfoot said Murray, a 21-year police veteran, directed police to the batons and later told them they were from his deployment in East Timor, as was the pepper spray.

She told Melbourne Magistrates Court that Murray, who left the AFP in 2009, co-operated with police in a record of interview in which he denied being aware the spray and batons were controlled weapons under Victorian law.

Ms Linfoot said he told police he considered the batons to be "mementoes" of his service in East Timor and that it did not occur to him to return them to a local police station.

Murray, 45, pleaded guilty to possessing two prohibited weapons and to possessing a controlled weapon.

Defence lawyer Peter Ward said in his plea in mitigation that Murray and his wife, a Qantas captain, had two children and he now worked as a travel consultant.

Mr Ward asked Magistrate Frank Jones to take into account that there had been a delay in finalising the matter, which was no fault of his client or a criticism of the prosecution, and that Murray had no prior convictions or any other charges pending.

Mr Jones fined Murray a total of $500 without a conviction and ordered him to pay $198 costs.
