The roll out of the new energy efficient street lights began in Avoca this month as part of the Lighting the Regions project.
Eventually more than 460 old mercury vapour style street lights will be replaced for environmentally friendly Light Emitting Diodes (LED).
As part of the first stage, up to 364 mercury lights will be switched over, while plans are also underway to replace 100 street lights shared with VicRoads.
The LED lights use 18 watts of power instead of 80 watts used by the current lights.
Pyrenees mayor Tanya Kehoe said the new lights were expected to save council up to $600,000 in power bills and maintenance cost over the next 20 years, as well as reducing emissions by up to 2196 tonnes of equivalent Carbon Dioxide.
“The project is full of positives for council,” she said.
