A state funeral for Bart Cummings will be held in Sydney next week after the family of the Cups King accepted an offer from the NSW Government to honour the 12-time Melbourne Cup winner. The service will be held at St Mary's Cathedral from 10am on Monday.
Cummings, the legendary Australian racehorse trainer, died in the early hours of Sunday morning surrounded by his family at his property on the north-western outskirts of Sydney.
NSW Premier Mike Baird offered the Cummings family, including son Anthony and grandsons James and Edward who have followed Bart into the racing industry, a state funeral on Sunday. They have agreed to the gesture.
Thousands of mourners are expected to pay tribute to Cummings, whose appeal with the mainstream community transcended racing.
Cummings' 12 Melbourne Cup wins is seven more than anyone else in the history of Australia's great race and the stable, which includes James after the pair formed a training partnership two years ago, had a winning double at Wyong on Sunday only hours after the revered figure passed away.
The Australian Turf Club confirmed the details on Monday morning.
