At the Western Hotel in Sturt Street, owner Dan Cronin was expecting a turnout of more than 200 people to partake in Grand Final fun, including sweepstakes, cheap schooners, giveaways of Carlton Draught, and eight huge tellies blaring the vision from the MCG.
He and his entire staff donned their favourite footy vests to keep in the spirit of things.
“Grand Final is traditionally a backyard, men’s shed sort of thing, but every year we like to do something a bit different,” he said.
One staff member, Toby Spratling, was extra proud of his outfit as it was signed by the entire Essendon football team.
With the temperature hitting a balmy 27 degrees, it made sense the pubs were popular Grand Final venues, thanks to their air conditioning and endless streams of amber ale.
JD’s Sports Bar in Lydiard Street was also a hit, with loyal patrons returning year after year to enjoy the big day at their local.
