The Lakers want to create a pathway which keeps players graduating from their youth girls squad at the club.
They are most likely to play in a newly created competition under the umbrella of the Victorian Women's Football League.
Ballarat Football Netball League operations manager Aaron Nunn said the league had discussions with the VWFL on Friday about the state of play with senior women's football in the greater Ballarat region next year.
He said the aim was to set up a six-team competition.
This would include existing sides Bacchus Marsh, Melton Central and Kynetion, which played in the VWFL west division last season.
Nunn said as well Lake Wendouree, AFL Goldfields was looking to get new teams from the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League and Sebastopol.
He said the aim was to have the VWFL run this competition in its first season and then have AFL Goldfields administer it.
Nunn said there were 52 girls graduating from the BFL youth girls competition and it was important to keep as many as possible involved in the sport.
Redan is Ballarat's premier senior women's team, playing in VWFL division two.
Nunn said Redan was Ballarat's marquee women's football team which provided the high end of the game in the city. He said this was the reason the Lions were not part of plans for a new lower level competition.
Lake Wendouree's new team will be coached by Matt Newbury, who is stepping up after two years as the Lakers' youth girls coach, which included a premiership last season.
"We're keen to keep as many players from our youth girls involved with the club. It's all about creating a pathway in a game which is booming."
He said as well as having a core of players with experience, he was keen to attract newcomers to the sport.
Newbury said Lake Wendouree hopeful of keeping most of the 12 girls moving up from the under-age competition.
"Most are keen to stay on. We're keen to talk to anyone else who might be interested.''
Newbury said the club was committed to women's football, given there was a vision for a national competition not too far down the track.
He said it was not that long many dismissed women’s football. “It’s a different story now.”
The Lakers plan to combined their youth girls and senior programs for training and development.
Newbury will lead the first training session on Wednesday, November 25.
