It's an annual spectacle that evokes wonder in visitors young and old and when the mystery behind the curtain is unveiled, Melbourne will be transported back 60 years.

Santa Claus is busy in his workshop most of the year and so are the creative team at Stage One in Kensington, who have brought the windows to life.

Marking six decades of animated excellence in the Bourke Street Mall, this year's theme is based on the children's book Little Dog and the Christmas Wish written by Corinne Fenton and illustrated by The Age's Robin Cowcher.

​To mark the 60th anniversary of the windows, they will depict Christmas Eve in 1956 and feature some of the city's famous sites including Flinders Street Station, the Block Arcade, the Hopetoun Tea Rooms and the Skipping Girl Vinegar neon sign in Richmond.

There is also a nod to W-class trams, Holden vintage cars, a horse-drawn bakery cart, and 130 characters in costume.

The face of Myer, Jennifer Hawkins, will unveil the windows on November 10 with Myer chief executive Richard Umbers and Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

Ms Hawkins recalled her delight at the windows emerging from the curtain in the past.

"I have so many amazing memories of the Myer Christmas windows, and am so excited to celebrate 60 years of this great tradition," she said.

"My favourite part is seeing the curtain drop to reveal the new windows and seeing how delighted the kids are gathered in the Bourke Street Mall."

Myer expects 1.2 million visitors from Victoria, interstate and overseas to inspect the windows and absorb the Christmas excitement.
