They were revealed as the player tokens for the Melbourne edition of the world's most popular board game, which was launched on Tuesday in soggy weather - according to some, another typical Melbourne symbol.

While the original edition featured the streets of Atlantic CIty and the version most Australians know and love takes you on a tour of London from the Old Kent Road to Mayfair, Melbourne Monopoly is made up of tourist destinations.

These include the Queen Victoria Market, Shrine of Remembrance, Etihad Stadium, St Kilda beach and the Arts Centre plus a few non-metropolitan destinations including the Great Ocean Road.

The MCG has been given the coveted Mayfair position, which seems a safe choice.

But where's the real Melbourne? Where are the food trucks parked outside Edinburgh Gardens or the massive lines waiting for St Ali coffee? What about Collins Street, with all its posh shops or the Spring Street cafes, with some former gang member sitting outside watching the traffic?

And you can't brand anything "Melbourne" without mentioning Brunswick's Dejour Jeans or a pub serving craft beer along Smith Street. And a Melbourne version of Monopoly without the street Dame Edna lived on in Moonee Ponds? No thanks.

A quick straw poll gave the board game the thumbs down - too touristy, no streets and what's with all the business placement? Some spots have the logo of a tax accountant, a radio station and a newspaper.

The inclusion of the Emporium shopping centre is odd, considering how new it is, as is the presence of the Great Ocean Road and Dandenong Ranges, because they're not actually in Melbourne.

Reid Herbert from game manufacturer Winning Moves Australia said the company had asked the public what they wanted to have on the board and they had received hundreds of suggestions, with the MCG the overwhelming favourite to take the top spot.

"It was enlightening consulting with the public who resoundly favoured the 'G," he said.

But for a city obsessed with house  prices it seems a bit odd to have a property trading game that encourages contestants to plant a hotel on a football oval. Or a war memorial. Maybe under a previous government, but not these days.

What game manufacturer Winning Moves Australia got right were many of the Community Chest and Chance Cards, which actually capture some of Melbourne's best stereotypes, like this gem: "A Fitzroy hipster takes too long ordering a half strength, decaf, soy-mocha frappacino, setting you back three spaces".

That's pretty good.

Lord mayor Robert Doyle said he expects players to debate about whether the locations chosen were the right ones. And he's right.

The board seems to have picked the sort of places that international tourists would visit and so the game seems designed for them. For the born and bred types, it feels a bit like a cartoon version of the nuanced place we love to call home, but don't see on a daily basis.

The Melbourne edition could have been a great reflection on the city which claims to be the best at everything - sport, art, coffee, dining, music and shopping. Instead, it's a case of collect $200 and do not pass go.
