The Ballarat Football League powerhouse remains the last club in the competition to appoint a senior coach for season 2016, but its football manager Stephen Darbin believes an announcement is imminent.
"We're getting close. Hopefully at the end of this week we'll know more if it works out to plan," Darbin said.
Darbin told The Courier the position could be filled by either one coach or joint-coaches.
He said it wasn't great to be without a person at the helm as late as mid-November, but believed getting the right person was most important.
"It's probably not the ideal situation, but it's important we get the right coach and not just a coach," he said.
It is believed that City were on the verge of appointing Marc Greig to the position before he eventually accepted an offer to coach the North Ballarat Roosters in the Victorian Football League next season.
Greig's appointment came after a controversial and protracted selection process to fill the vacancy left by Gerard FitzGerald, who is now coaching the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup under-18 competition.
Greig played in both City’s premierships in 2013 and 2014.
Waters led the club since 2010 and finished his tenure with the grand final loss to Darley in September.
City is advertising the coaching role on its website, where it asks for expressions of interest for the job.
It describes the successful candidate as having “anticipated playing and coaching experience at a division one level or above” and that they should possess a “strong desire to succeed and aspire to development opportunities within our coaching academy.”
Meanwhile, Skipton is the only club in the Central Highlands Football League yet to name a senior coach for 2016.
It follows the announcement that Aaron Braeckmans will lead Carnham-Linton next year.
The Emus have been on the hunt for a replacement to Kiernan Molloy and Tyrone Ross, who took on the job on an interim basis following the mid-season departure of Adam Brookshaw.
Brookshaw, who took over from Matt Rea, stepped down from the senior coaching position after just 11 games in charge.
Skipton won just two games last season for a 16th-placed finish to the campaign.
