The blaze, on Finchs Road and near Cuthberts Road, drew 17 units plus a fire-fighting helicopter and was under control by 4.37pm.
The fire covered about 30 acres, with a Ballarat City tanker also called out to a grass fire at Cardigan.
CFA officials said it was treated as the same blaze, given the two fires were only 100 metres apart.
Suspicious grass fires are nothing new to the area, with three fires near Dyson Drive – also off Cuthberts Road – all treated as suspicious in just the space of a week in February of 2014.
CFA Media confirmed a lot of resources were committed to Thursday’s fire given the dangerous conditions.
Another fire sparked up at Golden Point near Sovereign Hill about 5pm, but was under control by 5.07pm.
