The job of Red Frogs volunteers is to watch over your kids – give them water when they're queasy, walk them home at 2am and call the police or paramedics if they're in trouble.

This is the 14th year Red Frogs will operate at Victorian resorts – paying for their own accommodation and transport.

From a team of 12 in Lorne 2002, this year about 170 volunteers will serve at Lorne, Rye, Torquay and Phillip Island from November 28 to December 5.

Most are aged in their 20s. They often start 'work' at 7am and night shift finishes at 3am the next day.

Their tasks include handing out water and red frog lollies at parties and pubs, visiting apartment blocks and caravan parks, walking or bus driving people home in the early hours, and cooking pancakes for the hung-over.

Volunteer Raigan Howard, 32, a Red Frog at Lorne for five years, says Victorian 'Froggers' have to put up with Queenslanders' gibes about the fickle weather.

"We might have one day beautiful and the next day it will be driving wind, 11 degrees and raining. But that's OK. Victorian Froggers are built a bit tougher I think than our Queensland counterparts."

Mr Howard, a Geelong social worker, gets satisfaction from helping prevent teenagers making poor choices, or helping them when things go wrong. "We say, 'we're not here to tell you off, we're here to keep you safe and look after you'. They say, 'really? that's awesome'."

He has coaxed kids who are already drunk not to go out and drink more – by cooking them pancakes.

Brianna van't Hag was a schoolie in 2012 when she was pushed down two flights of stairs at a Lorne apartment block by an apparently drug-affected male schoolie.

She says while she was treated for mild concussion and bruises, her friends were "freaking out" until two passing Red Frogs calmed them and called paramedics to check on them.

Ms van't Hag, now 20, was so impressed that a year ago she became a Red Frog. Now a nursing student, she has been a weekly Red Frogs volunteer at parties and visiting students in apartments at the Waurn Ponds campus of Deakin University.

She has worked at O-week and at Geelong secondary school muck-up day parties.

She has worked at five music festivals, including one under-age festival in Melbourne in April, where a 13-year-old who had had "the equivalent of 11 vodka shots in a row." She had been dropped off and deserted by her friends at the first aid tent.

In between passing out and vomiting, the teen mentioned that one friend had her father's phone number. Luckily, as they dropped her off, the friends had mentioned they were going to get some food. "We hunted them down at the food area and found them and got the number," Ms van't Hag says.

Red Frogs Victorian co-ordinator Mark Gellie said the work of people like Ms van't Hag is "amazing". He was her grade 5 teacher and is now "pretty proud she's one of our volunteers".

Up to 30,000 Victorian school leavers are expected to head to schoolies in Australia and Bali, Fiji and Vanuatu in the next few weeks.

Mr Gellie's advice to schoolies is "look out for your mates, stick together, never leave a mate behind and utilise our support services."
