With her mother and father both practising ceramicists, this particular medium was not a foreign art form to the Smythes Creek resident.
“I’d be in the studio with them or going to exhibitions with Mum and Dad and visiting fellow potters who lived near us,” Pilven recalled.
“It was ingrained in me when I was little.”
It’s no surprise that the 25-year-old decided to follow the same path as her parents.
Since graduating from Ballarat High School, she went on to complete a double degree in visual arts (printmaking) and business at Monash University, perfecting and diversifying her talents as an artist.
A professional artist, Pilven’s work is as unique as it is bold and beautiful and has caught the attention of galleries and stockists from Ballarat and beyond.
Having exhibited as part of the Clunes Ceramic Award, her work was also on show and for sale at the National Gallery of Victoria and the artist has been featured in numerous publications and blogs including The Design Files, Frankie and Ballarat Lifestyle Magazine.
Combine that with the fact that she has more than 12,700 followers on Instagram and an extensive (now completed) Christmas order, and it’s not hard to deduce that there’s something special about her art.
Pilven’s current series of works uses the Japanese technique Nerikomi which sees her hand-build her creations using coloured clay.
Her use of bold and muted pastel colours is accentuated by 12-carat gold highlights, making her work distinctive in structure and form.
“My work is also quite colourful and I love colour.”
Although Pilven’s focus has lately been on ceramics, she said she did not want to be limited by one particular art form.
With a keen interest in fields including performance and printmaking, she said her future would feature numerous artistic endeavours with the hope to exhibit more frequently.
