TWO years ago, youngster Kane Bedggood was asked if he wanted to fill a spot at the Ballarat Memorial Sports Bowling Club.

Since then, the bubbly 10 year-old has never looked back.
Kane is now a regular division five player for BMS in weekend pennant and is also part of the Ballarat Gold Diggers, which is a Bowls Victoria junior development squad.
Kane’s mum Julie says that her son quickly took to the sport, after watching the rest of his family each weekend from the sidelines.
“Because he was so young, he would come and watch us play at the club,” says Julie.
“They were short one week and they asked if he wanted to fill in. He thought to himself, ‘I’m here already, I should start playing.’ And then he started enjoying it.
“He's a natural. He shows a lot of promise. Everyone has commented on how good a little bowler he is and how good his concentration is.”
Kane was perhaps always destined to take up the sport – after all, seven members of the Bedggood family currently play at BMS.
That includes Julie, who won a club champion award at previous club Ballarat North, as well as father Ned and older brothers Aidan and Ryan.
Julie reveals the club welcomed Kane into the fold with open arms.
“They’re all really nice people,” she says.
“They just love seeing such young people enjoying the sport. They talk to him about how he started and how he’s going – it’s really good.”
BMS men’s chairman Cameron Bryce is full of praise for young Kane.
“He’s great,” says Bryce.
“He's keen, he’s enthusiastic. He just enjoys the club and the people in it.”
Bowls isn’t typically perceived as the sport of choice for younger generations.
However, according to Bryce, there is no reason why kids shouldn’t consider stepping on the green.
“The best thing about lawn bowls is that it’s a sport for all ages and all physical abilities,” Bryce says.
“The more mature people like having youthful exuberance at the club. We recognise that juniors are the future of our club and we promote them into our top sides.
“I'm 42 and I’m nearly getting too old for it!”
Julie agrees, saying that Ballarat’s youth should consider bowls as a fun, rewarding alternative to other sports.
“There’s no reason at all why they shouldn't get involved,” she says.
“It can be a long day of concentration but it's a great sport to play, particularly if you don't enjoy a lot of running.
“It’s better to get out and about on the weekend, rather than just watching television or playing video games.”
