Students were encouraged follow the dress code of ‘bad taste’ for the day, and instead of the usual gold coin donation, students were told to bring a can of food.
Organising teacher Leigh Snibson said the idea had come about after a suggestion was made by one of the student leaders.
“We were talking about doing something a little bit different and one of the kids said why don’t we do something to help the less fortunate.”
The cans will be donated to the 3BA Christmas Appeal, which is currently accepting donations of cash, clothing and non-perishable food to help support people in Ballarat who are doing it tough over Christmas.
Mr Snibson said it was important to encourage young students to think of others who were in a less fortunate position to themselves.
“We’re a small community out in the Valley and (looking out for the disadvantaged) is something we need to invest in heavily.”
As well as helping to develop an understanding of poverty in the local community, Mr Snibson said the choice to donate food instead of money helped families who might be short on cash themselves.
“People have always got a can of something in the cupboard.”
The 3BA Christmas Appeal assists over 4000 Ballarat families over Christmas.
