While it is a big step for the 15-year-old, he takes winning form into the Daylesford Gift heats.
Keast had his biggest moment on the Victorian Athletic League circuit at Maryborough on Friday, taking out the restricted 120 metres.
His only previous victory had been in an under-17 100m, at Sandringham last season.
Keast, who started off 10m with only two rivals behind on the starting blocks, said he was unsure whether he had won as he hit the tape.
“All I knew was that it was close.”
He said he just focused on going hard to the line.
Keast was given the verdict over fellow Ballarat runner Alec Wiltshire by the barest of margins – 0. 002 seconds.
Keast is in his third season of professional running and is coached by Rob Lehmann.
Lehmann, who as a youngster also won the restricted 120m at the same carnival, was not at Maryborough, but congratulated his young charge by phone shortly after the success.
This was Keast’s first VAL meet of the season, having undergone nose surgery late last year to correct an injury suffered last football season.
Keast will line up in the last of seven Daylesford Gift heats over 100m. Khan Marr, who ran in Friday’s Maryborough Gift final on Friday, is the backmarker in the heat, which also features Noddy Angelakos, who finished second at Princes Park.
The Daylesford Gift also features Ballarat 400m powerhouse Liam Procaccino.
