Finished the series with a blazing century, yet should look back on the series as a missed opportunity to fill his boots. Was given a life on 6 in Hobart but failed to make the most of it, falling just before lunch for a rapid 64. On Boxing Day he dispatched his first three deliveries to the boundary, yet by the fifth over he had got himself out. Warner has shown his mettle against the best teams, but is yet to show he can be similarly ruthless against the weaker teams.

JOE BURNS

Falling early in Hobart, to one of the best deliveries in the series, put his position in peril - especially once Shaun Marsh shared in the mega partnership with Adam Voges. Selectors' faith, as much due to his burgeoning opening partnership with Warner as his own form, was rewarded in the first innings in Melbourne, with a century more assured than what he managed in Brisbane at the start of the summer. Will be tested by swing in New Zealand, but he earned the right to be there. Also showing improvement at short-leg.

Australia's decision to immediately recall the left-hander once he recovered from his hamstring injury was richly rewarded. He has now scored a century in each of the three Tests he batted in this summer. He deserves to keep that spot for at least the away series in New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and probably the start of the next home summer too. His skilful catch to remove key West Indies batsman Darren Bravo was heartening, given his reputation for being a mediocre fielder.

STEVE SMITH

Like Burns, his early departure in Hobart could be explained by an excellent delivery. The next time he batted, in Melbourne, he improved on what had been an underwhelming summer by his lofty standards to contribute unbeaten innings of 134 and 70. At the MCG he also showed more flair than he typically has as captain by declaring at the start of day four, rather than batting on and guaranteeing his opponents had no chance to win the match.

It was hard, and arguably unfair, to judge the right-hander on his efforts with the bat in the series, given he never had the chance to build an innings given the circumstances in Hobart, Melbourne or Sydney. His technique will be severely tested against the moving ball in New Zealand. There was good to emerge from the series for him: his final-day bowling in Melbourne was the liveliest of all the seamers, and his ability to swing the ball should make him valuable against the Black Caps.

ADAM VOGES

It is easy to overlook that he arrived in Hobart at a relatively precarious situation, with Australia having lost their best batsmen Warner and Smith before lunch on the first day. Was completely untroubled in making 269 not out in the first Test and 106 in the second. The revival of his fortunes since his half-century in the second innings at Trent Bridge - once the Ashes was lost, admittedly - has been remarkable. In a young team his influence and experience is proving valuable - as, of course, are his many runs.

SHAUN MARSH

Did not deserve to be dropped given his 182 in Hobart. It was nevertheless the right decision, given Usman Khawaja's claims to return after injury were even stronger and Joe Burns deserved credit for his good start to the summer in a tough position. He has long battled the slur that he is unduly favoured by selectors, but that huge innings in Hobart, combined with his pivotal 49 in the win in Adelaide in the preceding series, indicated why he has been afforded more opportunities than his peers.

PETER NEVILL

Very nearly went through the whole series without needing to bat. There is nevertheless no question on his place on the team given the quality of his glovework and his positive influence on the team. Will most likely be needed much more in New Zealand with the bat, but has a first-class record to indicate he is up to the challenge. There are few similarities between him and predecessor Brad Haddin when it comes to personalities, yet they share another trait: both are highly valued by their teammates.

Did not do much wrong. Was miserly in Hobart, which was valuable given James Pattinson's radar was initially awry on his return to Tests, and in Melbourne removed Denesh Ramdin and Jason Holder with consecutive deliveries in the first innings. His lack of vitality in the second innings at the MCG was explained by ankle soreness that later saw him replaced for the final Test. May never again be a first-choice paceman but it would be foolish to write him off given his ability to build pressure with the ball, which is adored by his captain and fellow bowlers.

JAMES PATTINSON

Was not as impressive as his statistics indicate, as there was a big gap between his best and worst and the latter would have been more costly against better teams. His best trait is being able to swing the ball away at good pace, and he demonstrated this was possible despite an overhaul of his bowling action. Just as pleasing as those instances he did get it right, such as his 5-27 in the second innings in Hobart and his third and fourth spells on the opening day at the SCG, was that his body held up over three consecutive Tests within a month.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD

Particularly influential in the first Test of the series, taking seven wickets as the lead paceman - Mitch Starc was injured - as his team ruthlessly took the lead against the West Indies. His wicketless performance in Melbourne was not a disaster as he was still accurate and retained decent pace. The Australian hierarchy deserves credit for picking him for the SCG, as it showed they had faith in him to cope, physically and mentally, with all six Tests this summer. On the opening day in Sydney he swung the ball with better control than at any stage of the winter Ashes series.

NATHAN LYON

Another great series for the off-spinner, most notably in Boxing Day Test when he and Mitch Marsh finished off the West Indies batsmen when Australia's pacemen were unable to do so. He shouldered a huge workload before the onset of rain in Sydney. Given the prodigious turn he achieved even on day one he was on track to have been near unplayable had the pitch had an opportunity to deteriorate across three innings. He can look back fondly on another Test summer in which appreciation of him has grown.

STEVE O'KEEFE

1 match, 3-63 in only bowling innings

O'Keefe's first Test performance in Australia was exactly as would have been expected for anyone who has seen him bowl for New South Wales over his decade-long career: not much turn but snaring two or three wickets while keeping the scoring tight. The left-armer's strength is his consistency; batsmen who wait for a bad ball will generally be disappointed, meaning they are forced to take chances against him. Could not match Lyon for turn but was a solid ally for him, and emerged with a creditable 3-63.
