Victorian Minister Martin Foley has "corrected" his travel report detailing the cost of a 10-day European trip, revising the total figure down from $85,000 to $33,000.

In his updated statement, the Minister for Housing, Disability, Ageing, Mental Health, Equality and Creative Industries said the figures first reported to Parliament mistakenly included the costs of travel incurred by two state government staffers – a deputy secretary from the Department of Health and Human services and a Creative Victoria employee.

Mr Foley's chief of staff also travelled with him, as did his wife, who paid her own travel costs and expenses.

"Earlier figures erroneously included the costs of departmental staff, which have now been removed," the updated parliamentary travel report states.

In his initial travel report the state Labor member for Albert Park declared the cost of the delegation's London, Venice and Trieste trip in July 2015 as $51,000 in airfares, $22,000 in accommodation and $11,872 in allowances and sundry expenses.

The updated travel report now states the cost at $17,575 for air fares, $11,102 for accommodation and $4367 for other expenses, a total of $33,044.

The opposition had described Mr Foley's spending for the trip as "extravagant" and something that "many Victorians will not accept".

Yet on Wednesday Mr Foley said he was conscious of minimising the costs of the trip and for that reason chose to fly premium economy instead of business class.

Asked on Thursday whether Mr Foley would comment on the amended figures, his spokeswoman said he would not.
