DECEMBER 19 truly was a baptism by fire for five young Elaine firefighters, after the recently trained youngsters fought the Scotsburn bush fire on their first outing with the Country Fire Authority (CFA).

The five firefighters aged between 16 and 21 had only just completed their CFA minimum skills test in November, and were on call for the first time when the 4000 hectare blaze began.
CFA volunteer trainer and assessor Russell Ford said the young firefighters displayed a skill set beyond their years.
“Normally the kids ease into the brigade gently with some small spot fires.
“We have adults who cant do what some of these kids did.”
After the blaze was put out many of the new volunteers remained on site, assisting with the recovery effort.
Many of the young firefighters had spent years competing in the junior CFA fire competition, where competitors are required to display a number of skills needed to fight a fire.
Mr Ford said these skills were evident when tackling the fire which burned 12 homes.
“A really big part is teamwork. these kids grow up together and they work as a team.”
Mr Ford said the age of the new recruits had been an advantage as they were often easier to train than older volunteers. He also said it was increasingly important young people become involved as older members begin to exit the organisation.
“You can train adults and it takes them a long time."
