Olivia Inglis, from the well-known horse sales family, was competing in the Scone Horse Trials in the Upper Hunter Valley, NSW, on Sunday morning.
Despite the efforts by the clinical crew from the Tamworth and Newcastle Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, she could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Scone Horse Trials Facebook page said OIivia received urgent medical treatment.
“It is with the deepest regret we announce that Olivia Inglis suffered a tragic accident while competing in the cross country phase at the Scone Horse Trials,” the post read.
“Olivia was riding the family's Coriolanus in the two star competition, this morning when the accident occurred.
“Olivia was given urgent medical attention, attended by the on-course paramedic, the on-course doctor and the Westpac rescue helicopter service but unfortunately was unable to be revived.’’
It is believed the accident happened when the horse got into trouble during a jump.
The Inglis family is well-known in the horse industry, breeding and selling thoroughbreds for competition.
The event has been cancelled in the wake of the tragedy.
"The Scone Horse Trials committee and Equestrian Australia offer their heartfelt condolences to Charlotte and Arthur Inglis and their family for their tragic loss," the statement said.
