The 56th annual Australian Mathematical Society meeting – the first held in regional Victoria – has been declared a success.
University of Ballarat associate professor of mathematics David Yost said hosting the convention was a compliment for both the university and the city.
“We demonstrated that UB is big enough to organise something like this and that our research is good enough for the society to bring its major conference here,” Dr Yost said.
The AMS annual meeting is traditionally held in capital cities, but has ventured to Wollongong and Newcastle.
University of Ballarat’s School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering has hosted smaller, specialist conferences in applied mathematics, computer science and an international meeting in optimism, which Dr Yost said helped attract this gathering.
The Ballarat conference covered all areas of mathematics in presentations and lectures.
This included the university’s annual Alex Rubinov Memorial Public Lecture, usually held in November, which was this year delivered by University of Sydney’s Professor Manfred Lenzen and titled “Think global – act local: A new quantitative view on how our actions affect the environment worldwide”.
