LISTENING to her romantic, hazy lyrics, it would be easy to think Demi Louise’s life was all about sun-drenched living and fine wine drinking.

The 22-year-old Ballarat singer-songwriter certainly provides the perfect accompaniment for both of those activities, as illustrated by the fact she will perform at this year’s Pyrenees Unearthed Festival, with its huge focus on the region’s wine production.
But life is rarely laid-back for the talented young artist, who still remains unsigned to a recording label and self-funds her trips across the world opening for artists like Gabrielle Aplin and Kodaline.
In fact, she works five jobs in and around Ballarat, including as a waitress and lifeguard, saving up to perform at gigs throughout the UK and America. Due to visa rules, she is unpaid for many of her gigs overseas, despite the fact she has a massive social media following of more than 60,000 fans.
“You’re always trying. I’ve been doing things independently for a long time. Labels are working in a different way now so I’m happy with the way things are,” Louise said.
“I’ve been really lucky to get the attention out of the performances, it’s so worthwhile. People spend a lot of money on clothes, and I don’t go out much. I sit at home a lot and don’t go out. I just work a lot and save a lot and that’s basically it.”
The Pyrenees Unearthed Festival will be good exposure for Louise, who also opened the Ballarat Beer Festival in 2015 and was also a Ballarat Youth Ambassador for the same year.
Running April 23 to 25, the festival will also feature a range of other musicians, a bonfire bash with P.W. Billy and Trevor Moore, an art exhibition and sale, a wine festival and an Anzac Day service and races.
The wine festival will be held on Sunday, April 24, with visitors encouraged to explore the 15 wineries along the banks of the Avoca River with tasting passes for $25. The day will also feature a masterclass and rare wine auction. Mount Mitchell Estate will also host an open garden on April 23.
Camping is available at Avoca Racecourse for $15 a night. Visit www.pyreneesunearthedfestival.com.au
