The Strikers had the momentum early in contest, taking a 1-0 lead courtesy of Lily McLean after South Melbourne failed to clear the ball from a cross.
However an injury to McLean early in the second half rattled the home side, with the visitors able to gain the ascendancy in the 68th minute via a Sara Alberici strike, which was swiftly followed up by another goal for the striker just moments later.
The Strikers managed to wrestle back control of the game in the 77th minute when a cross from Lisie Dodds found Tessa Curtain for the Strikers’ second, but South Melbourne were again on the offensive in the latter stages of the match, taking the lead in the 81st minute.
The win was consolidated in the dying minutes of the encounter, with South’s finding a fourth in the 86th minute to take home a comfortable victory and cement their spot atop of the ladder.
The match was the first senior outing for youngster Sam Dunstan, with the 15-year-old getting the call-up from the development squad to replace injured goalkeeper Kate Lyons.
Strikers coach Laura Brady said while she was pleased with Dunstan’s efforts in goals, but was let down by her teammates late in the match.
