Anthony Young, 17, Tristan Mair, 17, Natasha Ford, 16, Brady Dunne, 16 and Matthew Wetherall, 21, were presented with their awards on Thursday night as recognition of their efforts and bravery in confronting the fire that devastated the region south of Ballarat, destroying 12 homes.
Former Elaine CFA captain Russell Ford says all five youth worked for five days combating the blaze, manning tankers and generally helping to save homes – including their own.
“The fire burnt over our house and Natasha helped save it, before going out to work on the tankers,” he said.
