The Ballarat outfit led the Cougars at the first change, but a poor third quarter allowed the home side to extend their lead beyond 10 goals heading into the final change.
While the Sovereigns fought hard to reduce the deficit, they fell just short of their favoured opponents, losing 45-42.
The result will give the Sovereigns a renewed sense of confidence heading into their sixth round clash with the Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night.
The Waves have not managed to register a win since their first round success over Yarra Valley more than a month ago.
In the division one competition, the Cougars comfortably accounted for the Sovereigns, taking the points 50-37, while in the 19 and under encounter the Sovereigns suffered their second loss of the season, falling four goals short 52-48.
