Ballarat Regional Tourism and December Media, the makers of The Doctor Blake Mysteries, have teamed up to create an official Doctor Blake tour.
It is expected the tour will be up-and-running within six months, once various tour operators’ bids have been assessed by BRT and officially endorsed by the show.
The tour is part of a new BRT Doctor Blake Strategy, which aims to capitalise on the success of the show and draw visitors from across the world, but primarily the United Kingdom and North America.
BRT general manager marketing Louise Laing said because of the show, millions of of Australian viewers and hundreds of thousands more across the world had already explored Ballarat “from the comfort of their armchairs”.
Ms Laing said while BRT was still working on the “finer details”, visitors could expect to visit any parts of the city that had featured on the show – including Regent Cinemas, the Old Colonists' Club, the Arch of Victory and Ballarat Station.
She said Australia “and the world” loved the show, with BRT regularly inundated with phone calls and emails about the show.
“Every day, our Visitor Information Centre fields calls and welcomes fans of the show, or Blake Army as they are affectionately called, all asking about exploring the city through the eyes of Doctor Blake,” Ms Laing said.
”The Doctor Blake cardboard cut-out in the Visitor Information Centre at Town Hall is very popular for selfies.
“The show’s following is large and strong, and to have this show based in Ballarat is a fantastic coup for our city.”
BRT CEO Noel Dempsey said the organisation’s strategy hoped to cement Ballarat’s position as the “home of Doctor Blake”, claiming the show could do for Ballarat what Neighbours did for Ramsay Street in the United Kingdom.
“Ballarat’s iconic landmarks feature so prominently in the series and we expect an official tour will draw loyal Blake lovers from around the world to our city,” he said.
