The show of solidarity was part of the 2016 Million Paws Walk to help raise funds for animals in need at 17 different locations across Victoria, including Ballarat.
Victoria Park was transformed into a pooches’ heaven for the annual event, with residents and their four-legged friends taking full advantage of the sunny weather.
RSPCA Victoria Chief Veterinarian Dr Andrew Byrne said the day was about two things, socialising, and learning to eradicate animal cruelty.
“Many people don’t get the chance to socialise their dogs, so today is about a whole lot of fun with some serious messages behind it,” he said
“When we walk, we talk and a lot of issues come out. It brings it (the issues) to the forum and people discuss them.”
Dr Byrne said it was great to see improvements in education of animal cruelty over the last 30 years.
“People are now more prepared to speak up about it,” he said.
One dog owner willing to speak out against animal cruelty was Ballarat’s Gary Judge, who was participating in the walk with his 12 and a half year old dog, Rastas, for the fifth year.
“I just want to support this little fella who came from a shelter at 12-months-old – he is the best mate I’ve ever had,” he said.
“Some people take their animals for granted. But they’re smart and they need someone to take care of them. I’ve found out what a man’s best friend really is, it’s closer than any human.”
