The Vikings let slip a 2-0 lead to go down 4-3 in Braybrook on Saturday afternoon.
Sebastopol coach Michael Busija believed his team was the better of the two on the day, but a combination of poor defensive work and missed opportunities saw the visitors slip to its first loss since late April.
The Vikings had won their past four games in a great run of form before the weekend’s encounter.
“Some lapses in defence has cost us, (but) in saying that, the amount of chances we created, we probably should have scored more than three goals,” Busija said.
Busija said the fixture with the Greens – last on the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league four west table – was a “missed opportunity” given the Vikings could have closed the gap on teams above them.
Instead, Sebastopol has slipped to fifth, 14 points behind leaders Brimbank Stallions and six off second-placed Bell Park.
Carl Frankson scored twice in the first half on Saturday, before the home side clawed its way back to 2-2 at the break.
The hosts then went ahead in the 54th minute, before Pietro Angeli equalised for the Vikings shortly after.
And it took until the 87th minute for the 3-3 deadlock to be broken, with the Greens securing the winner shortly before full time and after a shot from the Vikings’ Kyran Taylor struck the crossbar.
The result was Maribyrnong’s first victory of the 2016 campaign, which is 10 games old.
Sebastopol now prepares for back-to-back home fixtures against Altona North and Point Cook.
