I was out on the roadside when a galah thudded down at my feet. When I turned it over to check its welfare I found that it was headless. What would cause this? We live on the highway, but I don’t think it was hit by a car. It must have been killed by an eagle. M.H., Mt Rowan.

Your galah could have suffered from a car collision (which you say is unlikely), a high-speed collision with overhead wires, or being struck by a hawk.
Galahs will at times make rapid sweeping and darting flights. This one may have decapitated itself in the process.
A peregrine falcon is a possible culprit. Peregrines commonly prey on galahs and galah-sized birds.
Goshawks normally take smaller birds, while the larger raptors such as eagles seldom take birds in the air.
