Packham was a part of a victorious men’s over-60 team at the Senior World Championships in Finland last Friday.
The Australian team was dominant, advancing through the group stage undefeated to then beat Great Britain en route to the final against USA.
Packham got the team off to the perfect start with a 6-4 6-1 win, Glenn Busby then won from a set down to give the Australian team an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of the doubles.
Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre manager Rob Benoit said Packham won the Ballarat Open at least 25 times. Benoit felt Packham along with Peter Keller were the best tennis players to come out of Ballarat.
Also recalling his 1983 clash with John McCurdy in the Mildura Open. Packham went down in the third set 6-4. McCurdy would make it to the round of 16 at Wimbledon that year, underlining Packham’s credentials.
