Movie The Truman Show (1998)
Masterpiece Movies (pay TV), 8.30pm
Scripted by New Zealander Andrew Niccol and directed by Australian Peter Weir, The Truman Show is the story of an American insurance salesman, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who lives with the ideal wife in a picture-perfect beachside town. What he does not realise is that he is an unknowing participant in a secretly filmed television show. On its release, The Truman Show was viewed by critics as a satire of reality TV, but its aims are far deeper, analysing with rare intelligence one man's relationship with his creator (stunningly personified by Ed Harris' Christof). Today, the Western world goes to great lengths to repudiate the existence of a divine presence, preferring the improbability of the Big Bang Theory (nothing, an explosion, everything) to unverifiable faith in a superior intelligence. When Truman finally sets sail for freedom, as many humans do spiritually, we are presented with a truly remarkable vision. SM
