Paul Keating has blasted council for a series of potholes on Clarke Street, which appear to be only half filled and still containing water following repair works on Tuesday.
Mr Keating said the street is generally quite busy and often carries heavy vehicles, describing the repair job as “poor”.
“A couple of the other residents said the same thing – it’s really to poor to say the least,” he said.
“If you have a look at the actual road itself it, it’s a really narrow street and there’s a power of traffic coming in.
“It needs widening and it needs an upgrade.”
However, City of Ballarat city services general manager Terry Demeo said the repair was only temporary, with the road shoulders to be graded next week.
“Temporary repairs were made to the edges of affected sections of Clarke Street this week with shoulder grading scheduled for early next week, dependent on the ground conditions,” Mr Demeo said.
Mr Keating is adamant that the road needs a full upgrade as well as widening, but Mr Demeo said there are no plans to widen the section.
Clarke Street was resealed in 2004-05,” Mr Demeo said.
“Council endeavors to re-seal roads every 15 years, so Clarke Street will be due in 2019-20.
“There are no plans to widen Clarke Street.”
A senior civil engineer with more than 50 years of road-building experience said that based on the photos, the section needed to be widened, believing that vehicles often had to veer off the side of the road to make turns.
The engineer also said the shoulders of the road had not been ‘cambered’ properly – with shoulders required to be cambered at three degrees to ensure they don’t retain water, causing edges to fail.
Mr Keating said he had contacted councillors several times to report the matter, but did not receive a response.
He said he was disappointed with the maintenance schedule in his area in Miners Rest.
