The Ballarat athlete had a best throw of 64.36 metres with her second of six attempts on Friday.
This initially placed her second.
She was unable to improve of this though - gradually slipping out of the medals.
Despite missing a podium, this betters her 2012 London Olympics performance when she was ninth.
Mitchell, 34, fouled with her first, third and fourth attempts.
She regained her rhythm to throw 62.20m and 63.02m to round out the competition.
Sara Kolak from Croatia took the gold medal with a fourth throw of 66.18m.
Suynette Viljoen, of South Africa was the silver medallist on 64.92 and Barbora Spotakova from the Czech Republic claimed bronze on 64.8
Mitchell, who qualified 12th for the 12-strong final, grew up in Casterton and moved to Ballarat to attend Ballarat High School and further her javelin career under the guidance of coach Liundsay Burgoyne.
