A long-serving player at the struggling club, Frys took over the senior coaching role midway though the 2014 season.
The club had registered just one win in the Central Highlands Football League prior to its two successes in 2016 after joining from the now-dissolved Lexton Plains league.
Frys said while the results over the past year had been a great confidence-booster for the club, they still had plenty of work to do to lift themselves from the bottom of the table.
“If everything goes to plan we could be winning four to five games next season and looking forward to the following year we would want to push for between 10th to 8th,” Frys said. “We’re looking towards bigger and better things and we saw what we can achieve this year when we play four quarters of footy.
“Smythesdale’s been my local club for a long time so it means a lot to me to get the club going in the direction we need it to be.”
Smythesdale president David Tuohy said Frys had shown great dedication to the club through the lean years and had earned the respect of the playing group.
“He wears his heart on his sleeve at the footy club and its not just a job for him,” Tuohy said.
“He’s put a lot of hard work into getting those results this year, particularly in the off-season in recruiting and organising pre-season.”
