Gill took on the senior role alongside Brendan Pearce in 2012, with the pair leading the side to another grand final berth on the back of the club’s 2011 premiership.
Prior to taking the top job Gill had spent three seasons in charge of reserves side where he took them to the 2010 premiership.
The 30-year-old has since steered the Lions to three consecutive preliminary finals since taking sole control in 2013, but concedes there is one thing missing from his time at the helm.
Gill said he would remain at the club in 2017 in a different capacity, but would consider returning to senior coaching in the future.
“I love the football club and they’ve been fantastic to me since I came here 12 years ago as a player and then the reserves coach,” Gill said.
“I’ve been involved in coaching for eight or nine years so I’ll have a bit of a rest and see what comes about in the future.”
The announcement comes as the Lions prepare to face-off against Lake Wendouree face a place in a fourth consecutive preliminary final.
Gill said while he was proud of his achievements since taking over as senior coach, he was weary of the on piece of silverware his charges were yet to acquire.
“There’s one thing missing but we’ve got a game against Lake Wendouree this week and we are still very much in the mix, so we’re doing everything possible to make sure it happens.”
