In a dramatic development, Kovacevic arrived the Eastern Oval with his right-hand bandaged and in a splint.
He has been replaced by Trent Stead in the 22 to face Bacchus Marsh.
Kovacevic told The Courier that he had surgery on Monday to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger.
He said he had been hopeful of playing despite the surgery, but it had been clear not long after the opetration that would would be lining up.
Jesse McInneny will now head the ruck division against Bacchus Marsh match-winner Daniel Burton.
