A man pretending to be a firefighter has allegedly deployed his assumed identity to con a shopkeeper out of $500.

The fake firey allegedly told a Northcote shop attendant that he was an MFB member and that he had locked his keys in his car about 2.45pm on Sunday.
After giving the man $500 as the loan for a locksmith, the staff member rang the local firefighting unit who got in their truck and headed to the scene to investigate.
When they got there, the MFB said locals pointed out the imitation emergency services worker as he walked down High Street.
The police were called, who arrested the 34-year-old NSW man and charged him with 12 offences including impersonating an MFB member and a number of deception-related offences.
He has been remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 19 October.
