Land near Paddy's Path, a popular walking track between Wye River and Separation Creek, remains a key concern, with more than 200 tonnes of dirt and rock threatening nearby properties.

While the Great Ocean Road is open between Lorne and the Cumberland River, the area between Wye River and Separation Creek remains off limits due to a potentially deadly landslide.

Emergency services are worried the latest rain will cause "major landslide issues", and have closed nearby roads and a section of beach in case the equivalent of 180 truckloads of earth comes crashing down the hillside.

Meanwhile, heavy rain is expected to sweep across Victoria over the next three days.

Between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain is expected to be dumped in the north-west, 40 to 60 millimetres in the south-west and 50 to 100 millimetres in the north-eastern parts of the state.

A State Control Centre spokeswoman said the latest rain would put pressure on "already saturated catchments" across Victoria.

"A complex area of low pressure systems will start to impact Victoria tomorrow evening," she said.

"Renewed river rises could be seen across already saturated river catchments."

Melbourne should be spared from most of the rainfall, but the mercury is set to drop dramatically as the low pressure system sweeps through on Friday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Keris Arndt said footy fans would be relieved to know Saturday will be a "fair bit clearer" than the rest of the week.

"Melbourne could get a shower in the morning, but it will likely clear up by the afternoon [for the grand final]," he said.

"We're looking at a maximum of 18 degrees on Saturday."
