Instead the new teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - the fifth instalment, shot in Queensland - has a ghostly pirate sending a deadly message to Captain Jack Sparrow.

The courier is to be Henry, a young, scared prisoner played by Brenton Thwaites, formerly of Home and Away and now a rising Hollywood talent after The Giver, Maleficent and Gods of Egypt.

And the message comes from the ferocious looking Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, who won an Oscar for No Country for Old Men and played another, just as lethal villain in Skyfall.

"Find Sparrow for me and relay him a message from Captain Salazar," he growls. "Tell him: death will go straight for him."

Then he adds a polite "please" for a touch of jauntiness.

The movie is a chance at career redemption for Depp after a series of disappointing movies and ugly headlines over his divorce from Amber Heard.

It has Salazar and his crew of ghost pirates determined to kill every pirate at sea after escaping from the Devil's Triangle. To survive, Sparrow has to find the legendary Trident of Poseidon, which gives its possessor total control over the seas.

Directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the Norwegian directors of the Thor Heyerdahl drama Kon Tiki, Dead Men Tell No Tales opens on May 26 next year.
