She was travelling from Ballarat towards Ararat on the Western Freeway near Trawalla at around 2am when it is believed her vehicle was hit from behind by another vehicle.
Ballarat Police Senior Sergeant Stacey Glenister told The Courier the trailer being towed had detached, while the vehicle rolled a number of times before coming to a stop in a ditch 100 metres from where the initial impact took place.
Police have spoken to those who stopped and rendered assistance, but also wish to speak to the driver of a large truck that was seen driving ahead in the right lane.
Janet McNeill said sister-in-law Kylie had told her it felt like a freight train had hit.
“She said it was just a massive impact and then before she knew it the car started flipping,” Janet McNeill said. “She was conscious through the entire thing.”
Two men from separate cars pulled over to render assistance and called emergency services.
“They were travelling a little bit of a distance behind and weren’t even aware that the accident had happened until they saw Kylie’s vehicle catapult across the road,” Janet McNeill said. “They didn’t believe they would see anyone get out alive because of the damage to the vehicle.”
“What we’re looking for is whether anyone knows of a vehicle that needs repair.
“Someone else might have seen the incident. There must be someone out there that knows something that can then lead to an explanation. We can’t say what happened until we get the other driver’s side of the story.”
Kylie McNeill was discharged from Ballarat Base Hospital on Sunday.
“It’s an absolute miracle that all she has is bruising,” Janet McNeill said. “It was very traumatic and she is just so lucky. She really couldn’t speak more highly of the two men who stopped, the ambulance and the hospital.”
