Ballarat Pest Control’s Glenn Peoples said heavy downpours, particularly the past month, had left a lot of stagnant water about – and all it took was a burst of warm days for a perfect breeding ground.
“There is a lot of stale water around, especially like that giant mass in Carngham Road,” Mr Peoples said. “There is not a lot you can do when mozzies are about – empty old swimming pools, use insect repellent. I think there’s going to be a lot of mozzies around this year.”
Supermarkets and chemists across the region have fast been selling out of insect repellents. The state’s health department also offers advice in its Beat the Bite campaign: wear loose-fitting clothes; limit outdoor activity in prime mosquito time (dusk and dawn); nets and screens; and, rub insect repellent on children’s clothing.
