Australian Border Force officers intercepted seven packages from the US and Hong Kong addressed to 34-year-old Hanh Truong​ between November 6 to November 9.

The packages were labelled as toys or model parts, but X-rays at the Australia Post gateway facility in Tullamarine revealed they actually contained firearm parts and handgun frames, a Border Force spokesman said.

Border Force and police raided Truong's home in Victoria's far north on Wednesday and arrested him.

They also allegedly found a number of handgun parts in his home.

The man was charged with eight counts of importing and possessing handgun parts illegally.

James Watson, the Border Force regional commander for Victoria and Tasmania, said investigations were continuing into why Mr Truong allegedly imported the guns.

Commander Watson said a find such as this was critical in keeping the community safe.

"It's good to ensure these firearm parts are not allowed to find their way on to the streets," he said.

Slightly more than 1750 undeclared firearm parts were detected at the border nationally in the past financial year, Commander Watson said.

If convicted, Mr Truong faces a significant fine, up to 10 years in jail, or both.

Wednesday's arrest comes in the wake of a significant seizure in September, which stemmed from an investigation into an armed robbery crew in Melbourne in February last year.

Six fully automatic assault rifles and 96 handgun frames were seized in the US and dozens of machine gun and handgun parts, as well as 10 kilograms of ammunition, were found in Victoria and NSW.

The weapons seized in the US were set to be smuggled into Australia in the false bottom of a shipping container. Gun components can be extremely difficult to detect when mixed with metal objects or car parts.

In another case, a high-powered handgun was found hidden in an Xbox console and parts for an assault rifle in a DVD player. Both were ordered by Australians through a black-market website and shipped by post from southern United States.
