The teenager, who cannot be named, is charged with about 40 offences for his alleged part in the spree.

The court heard he had shown no remorse and denied any involvement in the offending.

His priors run to 21 pages, the Children's Court of Victoria was told on Tuesday, and include violent offences. He first served time in detention in 2014.

The young man was in court for a bail hearing. He is yet to enter a plea.

He had been on youth parole since June.

Police allege the crime spree began on September 25 when the young man, along with several co-accused, stole keys for three cars at an address in Trentham.

A fortnight later the teenager returned to the address and tried to use the keys to steal a car, but found the locks had been changed, the court heard.

Instead he broke into another house and stole a Holden Commodore and a bank card, police allege, then took the vehicle through a McDonald's drive-through at 5am, using the stolen card to buy $10.25 worth of food.

Police say that on October 15 they saw the Holden driving in convoy in Port Melbourne with two other stolen cars — a Mini Cooper and a Nissan Patrol. Police tried to intercept them and the cars drove off.

Police came across the Mini Cooper again in Ballarat the next morning with the young man allegedly behind the wheel. He took off, driving at more than 100km/h on the wrong side of the road, forcing police to terminate the pursuit out of fear for public safety, it is alleged.

The young man was unlicensed at the time, the court heard.

On November 23 the accused was seen with two others at Tarneit railway station, where they tried to break into three luxury cars, it is alleged. When police arrived, they fled in a white pickup truck, again driving on the wrong side of the road and at high speed, forcing police to stop the chase.

The young man was eventually arrested at Sunshine. A police officer told the court the man had about 4 grams of methamphetamine – ice – plus drug-dealing equipment on him when he was arrested.

The prosecutor told the court the young man's actions had left his victims traumatised. One victim had their car stolen with medical documents, including cancer scans, still inside.

The prosecutor said the young man was "an unacceptable risk of further offending if granted bail".

The young man's lawyer said there was little forensic evidence linking her client to the crime, and the CCTV evidence the police relied on was blurry.

His father, brother, girlfriend and other friends all attended court. "Love you, brother", they yelled as he left court, "love you".

In deciding to refuse bail, the magistrate told the young man "you have not shown you can safely remain in the community.

"You were released on parole, and about halfway through the parole you were involved with drugs, dishonesty and dangerous driving."
