Statewide service provider Vicdeaf, which also offers community Auslan classes, contacted Vision Australia to urge them to provide interpreting services on Friday.

But Vision Australia chief executive officer Ron Hooton told Fairfax Media they would be unable to organise an interpreter in time for this year's event.

"Unfortunately, the logistics for the 2016 event are now complete," Mr Hooton said.

"Vision Australia is more than happy to collaborate to find a solution with Vicdeaf going forward for 2017."

Auslan interpreters have not previously been provided at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl event, which stars household names such as Marina Prior and Anthony Calleja and is in its 78th year.

The event is Vision Australia's biggest fundraiser, raising money for services for people who are blind or have low vision.

Vicdeaf general manager, community and language services, Brent Phillips said members of the deaf community had contacted his organisation about the event.

"Vision Australia is a key service provider in the disability sector and both organisations share the same values around access and inclusion," Mr Phillips said.

"We really want to encourage Auslan users to access this event in the same way as our hearing counterparts - it's such an iconic Melbourne event, it's important to make sure it's accessible to all."

Mr Phillips said a recent announcement that the AFL Grand Final would provide Auslan interpreters was a big step forward for the deaf community.

He said Knox City Council's carols last weekend had interpreters, and that was an example he hoped Vision Australia would follow.

Carols by Candlelight will have an audio description service available for blind and low-vision audience members, Mr Hooton said.

"Inclusion and accessibility for people who are blind or have low vision are at the core of Vision Australia's mission, and as a result, we have worked hard to ensure audio description is available at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Christmas Eve," he said.

"We are proud to bring this service to the many blind and low-vision guests in the audience."

An unofficial Carols by Candlelight Facebook page has been inundated with messages from people asking for interpreters to be included in the annual Christmas eve event.

"Vision Australia, I know you advocate for equal access for your blind clients so they can take part in every day activities. Please also include people from the Deaf community - make the Vision Australia Carols By Candlelight accessible for all by providing Auslan interpreters so Deaf people can watch and enjoy the carols like everyone else can," one person wrote.

"As you can see many deaf people want to go to Vision Australia Carols but unfortunately it is not accessible to deaf people as [there will be] no interpreters. I want a response from you by Friday 5pm if you will be kind enough to provide Auslan interpreters. If not, I will make a formal complaint to the Human Rights Commission," another wrote.
