The six bay supercharger, designed for city to city travel, will allow for Tesla’s electric cars to be charged enroute from Melbourne to Adelaide.
The supercharger can add up to 270 kilometres of range – or about three hours of driving – in just 30 minutes of charging.
It is located in the same shopping centre as Fantastic Furniture, Spotlight and Anaconda in Gillies Street North.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers who wanted to prove electric cars could be better than gas-powered vehicles.
The Tesla Roadster, which is a sports car built around an AC induction motor and powered by a lithium ion battery, was launched in 2008, with more than 2400 sold in more than 30 countries.
In 2012, the Model S, a premium sedan, was launched which is 100 per cent electric and can seat seven passengers.
It was named Motor Trend’s 2013 Car of the Year and achieved a five-star safety rating in the United States.
In 2014, Telsa unveiled its two dual motor, all-wheel drive versions of the Model S.
A gigafactory is now being built in Nevada that will allow for the production of a mass-market affordable Tesla vehicle, the Model 3.
By 2018, it is predicted the gigafactory will also produce more lithium ion cells than all of the world’s combined output in 2013.
