The usual number of eggs for magpie larks (mudlarks) is four. Sometimes there are three, and occasionally five.
Perhaps the wet spring has provided them with easier food than might be usual. Nevertheless, the parents would be constantly busy looking after them all.
One brood in early spring and another in late spring or early summer can be raised some years. Although young magpie larks are more sensible around traffic than magpies, it is common for one or more to disappear before they mature. This could be due to predation or accident.
