Farmer made the long trip from South Australia for her first Victorian meeting and ran an impressive time of 14.93 seconds off a 6.5m handicap in the 120m sprint.
Farmer was elated to take out the win and enjoyed the challenge of racing in the open age as she edged out Megan McMahon while Ballarat’s Jacqui McCann finished last after a false start set her back one metre.
The year 8 student at St Michael’s College, just outside of Adelaide, has enjoyed some strong results in the lead-up to the Maryborough event.
She drew confidence from her victory in the women’s 120m at the Pre-Bay Sheffield athletics carnival in December and then backed it up to win the Bay Sheffield in Glenelg just after Christmas.
Farmer said she felt she had good form ahead of the women’s necklace and in combination with her training program was primed for a good run - and that proved the case.
“I had high hopes and I was confident after my training and I was in reasonable form,” Farmer said.
“I did have confidence coming into the run, but it just comes down to the process at the end of the day.”
Farmer will now head home to South Australia for some local pro-meets and depending how her body holds up throughout the year she will look to race in the Stawell gift.
